Traffic Problem in Our City
Traffic is one of the unavoidable aspects of urban life. Each day, by various means of transportation, heavy loads of goods and a great number of passengers are moved across the city.
Due to its essential role in the vitality of a city, traffic has long been a serious concern of our municipal government. In recent years, new bus routes have been opened for passengers and new vehicles put in service. Many underpasses and overpasses have been built to ease out the “bottlenecks” at intersections. Meanwhile, additional transportation projects are under consideration.
Despite all efforts, traffic remains one of our municipal government’s biggest headaches. Traffic jams during rush hours are a way of life for urban citizens. In addition, traffic accidents occur with increasing frequency, resulting in heavy losses in both state property and lives. It is high time traffic problems were given top priority on the government’s agenda.
Dear Katherine,
Last Saturday I went to visit Suzhou with two of my friends. We set out immediately after lunch and two hours’ journey on the train we were already inside the city of Suzhou.
Suzhou is famous for its artistic gardens. There are about 150 in all, they say. Among them the rock garden was our favorite. It is called the Lion’s Grove as the stones in the shapes of lions form a maze of caves. We spent a whole hour climbing the rocks and several times I lost my way running into dead ends.
The next place I liked best was Hu Qiu Hills. Thousands of years ago, a king was said to be buried here with his treasure. Later rulers had often come to search for the tomb and the buried treasure but all in vain. We didn’t find any treasure, either, unfortunately, but we did have a nice time enjoying the scenery.
We came back to Shanghai late Sunday evening. I’ve taken some pictures of the gardens. If they come out well, I’ll send you some.
Yours Sincerely,
Wang Ling

The school nurse told me you have the measles and must be absent for three weeks. Since you are not to watch TV, perhaps you can listen to radio programs to help pass the time. I asked Bud to bring you together with this one of my albums of records “I can speak English”, as he said you have a player at home. I think you might find them fun. Do take good care of your eyes. Don’t think of doing any reading. We’ll help you catch up when you get well.
Dear editor,
My name is Li Ming. I am a high school graduate this summer. My favorites include football, violin, picnicking and many other hobbies. Since I live in the countryside, I have fewer chances to speak and write English, so it is my sincere hope to find someone somewhere who is willing to communicate with me in English. We can write about what we are interested in, like how we study every day, how we spend our spare time, what the places are like where we live. Sure, I believe we will have lots to write about.
My mail address is: Cunhua Village, Dichun County, 458900, Sichuan Province, PRC.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Ming
The diagram is about the growth of both rural and urban areas from 1953 to 2030. It shows that raral and urban population grows at a rather steady rate, with a more rapid growth in the rural section. For instance, in the year 2005, the total growth of population is about 120,000, in which the rural takes up more than half the amount. But as the diagram shows, what increases the quickest is the urban population, from below 20,000 in 1953 and 1964 to over 40,000 in 2000, which explains the rapid development of urbanization of the country. That process will go on in a very speedy pace as the years go on. The diagram shows that in 2030, the urban population growth will outnumber that of the rural one, contributing to the industrialezed process of the country.
Dear Wang Lin,
I’m so glad to receive replies to my letter in such a short time. And I’m so glad to offer help since this is what we are doing now here. Each of our classmates is supposed fo find one poor family and offer whatever help we can. There are some families in this area who are struck with poverty because of the drought last year. I can give you a list of them with their names and addresses. Your timely help is a great encouragement to our Helping-the-poor Program.
Enclosed please find a list of the families, with their names and addresses.
Yours truly
Li Ming

Changing Criteria For Judging Good Students
Years ago, to be good college students simply meant to be good at academic work. After being admitted into a college or university, students usually work very hard just to be “on top”. Most of their campus time was spent in classrooms, reading rooms, and laboratories.
But the criteria established to judge who is a good student are changing now. There is a growing number of students who are concerned about other things besides academic achievement. They are trying to achieve versatility in such areas as community activities, acting, music and sports. Some students ever become campus “businessmen” or “businesswomen” by starting up or serving in sellf-supporting businesses.
The changes that have taken place are, generally speaking ,changse for the better. Times are different, and the job market demands personnel with a variety of skills. Therefore, the students today are, in a sense, better prepared for challenge and competition upon graduation.
Habits
Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually acquired. When a person does a certain thing again and again, he seems impelled by some unseen force to continue doing so, thus a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult to break. It is therefore very important that we take great care in forming habits.
Let us cultivate good habits if we want to lead a happy and successful life. Honesty is a habit; loyalty is a habit; temperance is a habit, We should know that a person with good habits is always welcome while someone who has bad habits is everywhere despised. Many succcessful persons declare that they owe much of their prosperity to the cultivation of certain good habits in early life, such as punctuality, honesty and thoroughness.
Among the habits which we should shun are rudeness, laziness, lying, stealing and slandering. We ought to keep away from all these vices, and strive to acquire such habits as will prove to be good for ourselves and others.
4 Sons
These 4 gents go out to play golf one sunny morning. One is detained in the clubhouse, and the other three are discussing their children while walking to the first tee.
"My son Kent," says one, "has made quite a name for himself in the home-building industry. He began as a carpenter, but now owns his own design and construction firm. He[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]s so successful in fact, in the last year he was able to give a good friend a brand new home as a gift."
The second man, no to be out done, tells how his son began his career as a car salesman, but now owns a multi-line dealership. "Norm[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]s so successful, in fact, in the last six months he gave his friend two brand new cars as a gift."
The third man[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]s son, Greg, has worked his way up through a stock brokerage, and in the last few weeks has given a good friend a large stock portfolio as a gift.
As the fourth man arrives at the tee, another tells him that they have been discussing their progeny and asks what line his son is in.
"To tell the truth, I[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]m not very pleased with how my son turned out," he replies. "For 15 years, Chico[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]s been a hairdresser, and I[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]ve just recently discovered he[$DHZ_SingleQuotes$]s gay. However, on the bright side, he must be good at what he does because his last three boyfriends have given him a brand new house, two cars, and a big pile of stock certificates
STILL THINK YOU ARE HAVING A BAD DAY?
A man was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the kitchen. The man was racing the engine on the motorcycle when it accidentally slipped into gear. The man, still holding onto the handle bars, was dragged through the glass patio doors and along with the motorcycle dumped onto the floor inside the house. The wife, hearing the crash, ran into the dining room and found her husband lying on the floor, cut and bleeding, the motorcycle lying next to him, and the shattered patio door. The wife ran to the phone and summoned the ambulance. Because they lived on a fairly large hill, the wife went down the several flights of stairs to the street to escort the paramedics to her husband.
After the ambulance arrived and transported the man to the hospital, the wife righted the motorcycle and pushed it outside. Seeing that gas was spilled on the floor, the wife got some paper towels, blotted up the gasoline, and threw the towels in the toilet. The man was treated and released to come home. Upon arriving home, he looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle.
He became despondent, went to the bathroom, sat down on the toilet and smoked a cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, he flipped it between his legs into the toilet bowl, while seated. The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard the loud explosion and her husband screaming.
She ran into the bathroom and found her husband lying on the floor. His trousers had been blown away and he was suffering burns on the buttocks, the back of his legs, and his groin. The wife again ran to the phone to call the ambulance. The very same paramedic crew was dispatched and the wife met them at the street. The paramedics loaded the husband on to the stretcher and began carrying him to the street. While they were going down the stairs to the street accompanied by the wife, one of the paramedics asked the wife how the husband had burned himself. She told them and the paramedics started laughing so hard, one of them slipped and tipped the stretcher, dumping the husband out. He fell down the remaining stairs and broke his arm - Taken from a Florida Newspaper.
